FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

University of Hawai`i Center Graduates Celebrate 2010 Commencement: 70 Maui Residents Earn Bachelor’s and Graduate Degrees through the University of Hawai`i Center

(May 4th 2010, Kahului, Hawai`i)— From a father and daughter from Hana to a grandmother who cares for foster children, a diverse and determined group of seventy Maui County residents will receive their bachelor’s and graduate degrees at the University of Hawai`i Center’s (UH Center) Spring 2010 Commencement Ceremony. Held on Friday, May 14th at 5:30 pm in the Maui Beach Hotel’s Elleair Rainbow Ballroom, these graduates prove that getting an education is never out of reach despite challenging life circumstances.

UH Center Director Karen Muraoka states, “The University of Hawai`i `ohana is extremely proud of our graduates accomplishments, commitment to their education, and desire to serve their community. We look forward to seeing them thrive in their careers as leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs, nurses, social workers and more. Many of these individuals made enormous personal sacrifices in their commitment to achieving their dreams.”

Since the establishment of the UH Center by the UH Board of Regents in 1996, 845 residents have earned their degrees while continuing to live in Maui County. These graduates were able to earn bachelor’s and graduate degrees directly from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa, the University of Hawai`i at West Oahu, and the University of Hawai`i at Hilo without leaving Maui. Courses are taught on-site on the University of Hawai`i Maui College campus (UHMC), via the internet, and by videoconferencing, allowing students to engage with their professors and classmates in real-time. Many of the programs cater to Maui’s business professionals and students raising families by offering courses conveniently on the evenings and weekends.

The UH Center continues to augment the new bachelor’s degree programs offered at UHMC. Maui county residents have the “best of both worlds” as they can choose from the programs at UHMC and as well as those offered via UH Center. Because of UHMC and the UH Center, higher education on Maui has never been more accessible.

Many UH Center programs provide critical advanced training for those in Maui’s public service sector. The UH Center offers bachelor’s and master’s programs in accounting, early childhood, education, interdisciplinary studies, nursing, public administration, business administration, information technology, and more. To find out about the bachelor’s and graduate programs, visit uctrmaui.hawaii.edu or call the UH Center at (808) 984-3525.
